Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul - Thank You 7"

$11.99

Charlotte Adigéry and her long-term musical partner Bolis Pupul return as a duo with their kaleidoscopic new single 'Thank You'. The song is co-written and co-produced by Soulwax and released via DEEWEE.

‘Thank You’ is a tantric acid-electro stomper characterised by Charlotte’s signature deadpan vocal delivery who describes it as “a cheeky and cynical revenge for all the unwanted unsolicited opinions some people generously offer us”.

To celebrate, DEEWEE have made their first limited edition 7” vinyl, featuring the original song 'Thank You' and the exclusive instrumental version on the flip side.

The song is an accumulation of all the cliché lyrics Charlotte & Bolis have heard over the years (+ of course a wink to one of the most copied sentences in art):

“It came about when we were touring and heard a song on the radio opening with ‘I was walking down the street’ which made us strongly cringe. But the thing is, cringing is a shared passion of Bolis and I. So we passionately made a song out of it called ‘Ceci n’est pas un cliché’.“

The table has been flipped over, the wine spilled on their custard coloured linen suits, and the pudding squitted all over their dumbfounded faces. A new chapter has been written, one dedicated to the unwanted. Love songs for losers, a dance with the undesirables, a five minute walk in the park after dark while the kids sleep cozy.

Sworn Virgins, school never taught us these valuable lessons, but life taught us good. Elbows deep in the adventure, eyes closed while driving. Strip yourselves down and slather yourselves up in it.

Phillipi - Amadurecimento 12"

$14.99

SIDE A: SAO PAULO / VIBE DE VERAO
SIDE B: 9000 / GELO SECO

Earlier this year the São Paulo duo Phillipi & Rodrigo dropped their beautifully uplifting debut album ‘Paciencia’, which earned the backing of an eclectic array of supporters. Now Phillipi is set to release his debut solo EP ‘Amadurecimento’

While ‘Paciencia’ pulsated with a euphoric beach party vibe, Phillipi’s solo project explores much darker territory. By uncompromisingly maximising the bass alongside a relentless beat, lead track ‘São Paulo’ is immediately oppressive and ominous. That intensity only amplifies as it’s blown open with tribal percussion, almost whispered vocals and glitchy synth stabs. ‘Vibe De Verao’ then takes a more progressive approach, with minimalist techno constantly evolving in surprising and inventive ways.

The EP’s second half extends Phillipi’s impossible-to-pigeonhole approach. In complete contrast to the preceding tracks, ‘9000’ is cinematic in scope and lighter in tone, feeling like the score to a lost ‘70s sci-fi cult classic that’s been reworked for 2019. And ‘Gelo Seco’ caps an unorthodox sonic adventure by setting a spliced, stuttered vocal simple around a dancefloor-friendly soundscape - making the title, the Portuguese phrase for dry ice, entirely appropriate.

‘HAHA’ is built entirely around a sample of Charlotte making herself laugh and perfectly captures the essence of Charlotte & Bolis’ forthcoming debut album Topical Dancer. Asa Moto - Martino EP

$14.98

Side A: Connexion à Liege / Cacao
Side B: Missing Teeth / Veleda / In My Body
Since debuting on Soulwax’s imprint, DEEWEE in 2016, the Belgian duo have steadily released a series of acclaimed EPs across the last five years.

Now, on 'Martino' EP, Asa Moto’s analogue mastery is on full display, pushing the production boundaries of their expansive collection of equipment. First track ‘Connexion à Liege’, a song about a night drive from Ghent to Liège, combines trippy delays and lush vocoder work across pastel synths for a laidback start to the EP. Lead single ‘Cacao’ sees the duo craft a chugging instrumental peppered with stereo FX and vocals as the track evolves into a floaty synth driven affair.

‘Missing Teeth’ investigates the mystery of the duo’s local bakery owner’s teeth, flipping their confusion into an oddball dance friendly jam, while ‘Veleda’ brings delicate synth work, modulating hardware, and hard hitting drums. Closing track ‘My Body’ forgoes percussion of any kind, with the duo twisting their own vocals into a tongue and cheek acapella, described in their own words as "our contribution (and solution) to the war against the war on drugs".

Boils Pupul - Neon Buddha 12"

$14.98

Side A: Neon Buddha
Side B: Rendez-Voodoo

Fresh off the back of an acclaimed debut album with long-time collaborator Charlotte Adigéry; Belgium-Chinese musician Bolis Pupul explores themes of heritage and identity on his new solo two-track 12-inch ‘Neon Buddha’ - out 6th May.

Mixing widescreen electronica – think early Mr Fingers-like techno and Yellow Magic Orchestra’s exuberant man-machine minimalism – with the warm-hearted and wonky naivete of Belgian New Beat, Bolis’ singular sonics are at once playful, emotive, unrelenting and tender. The title track is inspired by a dream Bolis had of a pagoda in Hong Kong featuring a contemplative Buddha made of neon lights. The music is similarly bright and exciting – an insistent acid squiggle giving the track the requisite Weatherall-friendly 'A Love from Outer Space' chug.

The vinyl is housed in a UV Gloss Sleeve with a heavyweight printed inner.

Side A: Same As It Never Was / Burn It Down
Side B: Six Weeks
Justin Strauss and Max Pask have joined up to form a new project called Each Other, with their playful self-titled EP ‘Be Nice To Each Other’.

The EP finds Each Other creating an eclectic range of sounds in the space of just three tracks. The opener ‘Same As It Never Was’ is the most immediate of the set, becoming more hypnotic as the minimalist topline buries itself into your subconscious. The downtempo ‘Burn It Down’ then darkens the mood, feeling closer to a dystopian sci-fi soundtrack than an underground club classic, before the playful and progressive ‘Six Weeks’ up the energy with jittering beats, sparkling synths and a cooly understated vocal.

James Righton's ‘The Performer’ LP, stands in stark contrast to the electro-hedonism of Righton’s work with Klaxons. Instead, it spins through various points from 1970 onwards. It touches on the suave art-lounge of Roxy Music, the jangly grooves of R.E.M., the sumptuous psychedelia of latter day Beach Boys, and the songwriting gift of Nick Lowe.

Laima 'Home' is OUT NOW via DEEWEE and The Vinyl Factory, pressed on a limited edition double LP. Featuring beats from Iggor Cavalera and production from the Dewaele brothers.

There are two key elements that make ‘Home’ such a distinctive project. Thematically it explores how the two core contrasts that inform Laima’s life can coexist. On one hand it’s about domesticity – her love for her family and her frustration with domestic routine. Yet on the other, it’s about her creativity – her desire to express herself artistically while still tending to her role as a mother and a housewife.

“It's almost like a family photo album in another format,” says Laima. “I needed to find the balance in this dichotomy, to feel good with myself in both roles, and be aware of things that really mattered to me. To be a woman, a mum and a female producer: all of these feelings were in the music.”

Sonically, ‘Home’ is also a striking proposition. It’s a package which features two records that are designed to be played simultaneously: Laima’s vocal and synth tracks on the ‘TONAL’ disc alongside Iggor’s beats on the ‘RHYTHMICAL’ record. Syncing two records offers an unconventional way to experience the music. Rather than passively hearing the music, the listener’s need to ritualistically sync both records makes for an immersive experience.
