Prinzhorn Dance School’s sophomore album, Clay Class, releases a quiet energy amongst a dark landscape, inarguably in tune with the downtrodden economic situations that have permeated modern life in the band’s native Britain, and conversely, along our shores. Tobin Prinz and Suzi Horn form a compelling duo whose shout-and-answer approach, paired with edgy and steady bass/drum patterns, achieves perfection in songs such as “Seed, Crop, Harvest” and “Your Fire Has Gone Out.” The album is constructed on the emblem of empty space, as songs such as “I Want You” bridge the gap between musical minimalism and cold intimacy. The oscillation between starkness and warmth pays homage to the band’s debut 2007 release, while also creating a modern, if not postmodern, musical snapshot of life across the pond, as well as in our own backyards.

The two grizzled bears themselves – Joe Goddard (of Hot Chip fame) and Raf Rundell – teamed up to create a hyper-melodic homage to their hometown of London, mixing and muddling genres of ancient dancefloor rock and uplifting reggae to create a jocular album of individual hits. The bouncing, inviting opening pulsations of “The Birds & The Bees” offer a lightness that is instantly offset by deep house vibrations that provide the backbone of the album. The earnest catchphrases of “Bear Hug” – “I want to give you a bear hug” – reveal the sweet sentimentality embedded within the thick house-y beats. First single “Work” is a true hands-in-the-air house anthem, piano stabs, 4/4 stride and a very major chorus. The LP as a whole reveals a collection of instant classics that would be just at home pulsating from the speakers of a dance club as well as a home turntable.  Cliche? Yep! True? Double yep! On his most recent remix,“Dub for Mehdi,” a transformed version of the Rapture’s “How Deep is Your Love, A-Trak has reworked the romping house/disco sound into what might be summed up as dance-floor perfection. In the original’s place, the DJ has designed a song that morphs from music-to-move-to into a full on electro whirl. The whole track simply soars.

It’s a fitting homage for A-Trak’s long-time friend, late producer DJ Mehdi, whose recent death came as a tremendous loss for the dance music community as a whole. The New York City-via-Montreal DJ recounts how the single was even musically informed by Mehdi before his untimely passing:

“When I was close to finishing [this remix], I played it to my friend, the irreplaceable DJ Mehdi. I was working on the main version of the remix, the vocal version. I knew I would make a few alternate edits during the mixdown. The funny thing was, Mehdi’s favorite part was the ending! He…suggested that I have that part come in earlier. My reaction was: that would work well for the dub version. And sure enough, when I finished mixing it down I made a dub with [his] suggestion. When I sent it to Mehdi shortly after, he responded (as a joke) that I should call it “Dub For Mehdi.” This one’s for you Memed.”

The Populette remix, on the B-side, while not quite as frenetic in its energy, achieves near visual beauty, the images it conjures are so lovely. Imagine the original now filled with blinking, silvery-synth bells, all flashing like lights. If you could turn music’s notes and tones into images, Populette’s remix would be nothing short of illuminated. - Kali Holloway

YACHT are always in the mood for dancing, and a song like “I Walked Alone” – with all its wiry funky bass and itchy beats – seems designed explicitly to provoke bodily herks and jerks. The Larry Gus remix shimmies at the original track’s pace but shakes with a different feel; the spasmodic energy and rhythms are eased by the gentle sounds of tribal vocalizations, rolling percussion and what sounds like the warm, white-noise hiss of an well-worn vinyl record. Max Tundra’s version – an even more electrified take on the YACHT original – spins out in annular rhythms that play off the ear like the aural version of a hypnotist’s spiral. Parisian duo Get A Room!, aka Rove Dogs and Jeff Masson, make things housier (and more pop, in the best way), by laying on synths where there previously were none and infusing the whole song with a frivolity that just beams outward. And New York City stalwart Jacques Renault, who contributes a remix both with and without vocals, takes his time to build to a plateau of perfectly paced beats and a wall of recurring dream(y) house rhythms. - Kali Holloway

Despite the post-industrial label often affixed to Factory Floor, there’s a greater complexity of sound within the band’s music that defies such facile descriptions. Yes, there are rigid, fixed beats, and other sounds from the manufacturing plant, as suggested by the trio’s moniker. But there is also an underlying danceability that belies the seeming austerity of the sound; a hint at warmth that cuts through the permafrozen exterior. That curious balance has paid endless dividends thus far: they’ve been remixed by producer Gavin Russom, Liars’ Angus Andrew and No Age’s Dean Allen; remixed and released by Optimo; remixed and collaborated live with Throbbing Gristle legend Chris Carter; and remixed and produced (!) by Joy Division and New Order’s Stephen Morris. It’s been a whirlwind few years in terms of musical accolades, and Factory Floor’s DFA debut is a glimpse into why. Be sure to check out the video for ‘Two Different Ways’ in the previous post.
